Why Luna Bar's Lemon Zest Left a Sour Taste (And What You Should Try Instead)

I’ve always been a sucker for trying new health bars—especially the ones that promise to pack a punch in terms of nutrition and flavor. So, when a free sample of the much-hyped Luna Bar Lemon Zest arrived in my mailbox, I was curious to give it a try.

Let me just say, my first bite left me shocked… in a not-so-good way. The sweetness hit me like a sugar bomb—reminded me of those powdery candy dipping sticks from childhood (you know the ones your parents probably regretted letting you eat?).

I thought, “Okay, maybe the second bite will be better.” Nope. It just kept getting sweeter and sweeter until, with a slightly queasy stomach, I ended up tossing the whole thing in the trash. Why did I fall for this? And more importantly—why does Luna Bar consider this a health snack for women?

A Closer Look at the Ingredients

Here’s where things get a little concerning. After tossing the bar, I took a look at the ingredients list and, to my surprise, it’s packed with some ingredients I’d expect to find in a junk food aisle, not a "nutritional" snack for women:

  • Soy Protein Isolate: Sure, it’s a protein source, but soy has been linked to potential health risks for women (think cancer and infertility).
  • Too much sugar: Nine grams of sugar? That’s almost the same as a candy bar!
  • A whole bunch of processed oils and syrups: Palm kernel oil, vegetable glycerin, chicory fiber syrup—none of which I’m looking for in a “health” bar.

And don’t even get me started on the 95 mg of sodium! Our bodies don’t need that kind of added salt.

What’s the Better Option?

Instead of loading up on processed ingredients and empty calories, there are far better options for fueling your body. If you're trying to avoid the sugar crash and want something that genuinely supports your energy levels and health, skip the Luna Bar and reach for a piece of fruit. Apples with a dollop of unsweetened almond butter, anyone? 🍏

But if you’re looking for something else to power through your workday (without the sugar overload), let me recommend Mantra Labs—founded by none other than Jared Padalecki (yes, Sam Winchester from Supernatural).

Mantra Labs has created something truly unique: their GO drink is packed with natural caffeine from tea leaves, hydration from oceanic electrolytes, and an impressive mix of vitamins and minerals. Plus, it’s got zero sugar and zero calories—so you’re only getting the good stuff to fuel your day.

Here’s what’s inside:

  • 0 calories, 0 sugar
  • 100mg of natural caffeine
  • Oceanic electrolytes and 70+ trace minerals
  • A massive vitamin B12 boost (500%!) and other essential nutrients

What’s Your Health Journey?

It’s clear that when it comes to making choices for our health, we need to be more thoughtful about what we put into our bodies. I’ve made the decision to skip the over-sweetened, soy-laden "health" bars and focus on more natural, nutrient-rich options. The new year is a great time to reflect on what we’re eating and make healthier choices—whether it’s switching up your snacks or finding better energy solutions.

What about you? Have you been fooled by a “health” bar that wasn’t so healthy after all? Let’s make this year about more informed, intentional health decisions.
