Still in Question

I can't believe its been 4 days since my last post. I guess I need to try to update more often. I actually didn't think it had been that long!

With all of the talk of lay offs, life has been very busy. I've been working non-stop with the exception of weekends and even lately I've been working those.

This week is when my husband will know if he's being laid off or not. I'm pretty sure he's very nervous even though he rarely acts that way. His nervousness consisted today of, Well, this week I'll know. He's been pretty much counting down the time and spending a lot of time talking to his dad about the lay off.

I was also informed that one of my cousins was laid off at Acme Foundry in Coffeyville, Kansas. He was told that 75 people were laid off there, including himself.

My aunt who was suppose to get hired on at Spears in Caney, Kansas may very well be at risk as well. She was offered a job after she was let go from Amazon (they were weeding out full-timers to temp only), but that was several months ago. Now that every company has been laying off, I wonder if she'll still have the job to go to after she gets my uncle settled.

Jobs are scarce and more and more people are doing what they can to stay afloat. It's gone as far as some women are forming a coop with one man for a house. Not something I would ever do, but everyone is entitled to their own way of life just as long as it doesn't hurt anyone I guess.

We're Still Waiting

We're still waiting to learn whether my husband will be laid off at his job or not. He's been told that everyone will know by January 29th. Now that the date is set, I think he's even starting to worry.

The biggest problem we'll have is that fact that unemployment won't cover much. We barely scrape by as it is and it's even worse now that we had to get a vehicle that runs. Another problem will be that all of his benefits will drop.

Right now he's been seeing a dentist because he's been having some issues with his teeth. All of that will change however if he's laid off. Another thing that we've learned is if he's laid off, he may very well have to start all over again in hourly wage.

This is a very small town, so there are really no jobs that pay decent enough to live around here. So we're thinking if it comes down to it, we may have to sell this house. But, the only problem with that is, no one is willing to buy right now. The only other option would be roommates, and we don't have enough bedrooms for that.

So there are a lot of things to consider. Our last consideration is to move to a bigger city. While it might help job wise, it won't help as far as the cost of living. Cities are generally much more expensive. So right now it's just a watch and wait kind of situation.

Ohh My, My, My

With my previous post still in my mind. It's true! Several big boys online have just laid off and one of them I use for income. No wonder I wasn't able to get into my account. I wonder if this will be worse than the first depression we had. Sigh

I know last night my father-in-law was considering packing up all of his stuff in self storage and driving a truck for a living if he's laid off. I wonder what the hubby and I will do?

Paintball and Lay Offs

A while back my hubby was talking about paintball and opening a field here with his brother. He wanted to look at different equipment like a paintball sniper, tanks and masks. His idea was to use the income tax return to get started. He even went as far as scouting for the land. But, then his talk stopped and he was back to just talking about work.

So I really wonder if he would have ever gone through with his plans. I still wonder, so maybe? But, now that there's talk of lay offs at work, I wonder if he'll try something new or if we'll have the money to really do something like that.

Right now I don't think owning a paintball field would be a good idea because sales wouldn't be very good. People love entertainment, but when it costs money and there's very little of that, it doesn't work out. Still there's nothing wrong with playing even if that means buying new paintball equipment.

It's still too early to know, but my hubby is still at risk for a lay off. He and his dad were discussing it last night and the earliest he'll know anything is this week or next.

A Possibility of a Big Move

Now that things are a little more out in the open and life has calmed down a bit, I can explain my other reason for leaving my job. There is a big possibility that we are moving.

About 3 weeks ago my husband and I got a possible job offer in California. It would mean a big relocation, but it could very well be worth it. At first my husband had cold feet about the offer because it's an all new world for him and a lot more expensive. However, this job may have just came at a really good time. A few days ago Independence, Kansas announced its closing of the Cement Plant. When this happens, over 100 people will be without a job. That wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that we are a small town and several other companies here in Independence, Kansas just announced lay-offs. 3 really big companies to be exact and one of them happens to be my husband's. When that happens over 1000 people will be without jobs. That's a lot of people for a small town!

When my husband found out about the layoff, at first he thought it was a rumor and ignored it. But now that it has been confirmed my husband is in somewhat of a panic. If he's laid off we won't be able to afford this house, even if we got another job here.

So, he called his mom who lives in Kansas City, only to learn that they're dealing with the same problems up there. It's because of the economy and most people are just now starting to realize that it's real. Companies are not willing to pay decent wages and if they are, they expect you to work 3 or 4 jobs for that same pay. That's what happen to my mother-in-law and that's another reason I left my job. I was not only a guest attendant, I was also a housekeeper, lobby cleaner, laundry aid and assistant manager getting paid minimum wage. Not minimum wage per a job, minimum wage for all of the jobs.

So, it's a big reason we're considering the job in California. The area is Redondo Beach. If we don't head there, we would go to Kansas City or Nevada. My husband used to gold mine with his uncle's company, so that's another big possibility as well.
