Eating Raw Oysters Safely

Usually when it comes to food, my tastes vary. Some may call me weird and others, picky. One of my favorite foods is sushi and with it, raw oysters. The first time I tried raw oysters was about 10 years ago in New Jersey. What's sad is I can't even tell you exactly where because I've forgotten most of that part of my life. After my first experience with raw oysters and of course sushi, I was hooked.

It wasn't until recently however, that I learned that consuming things like raw Gulf oysters can be actually dangerous. Eating raw oysters can actually lead to a disease known as Vibrio vulnificus.

If you love raw oysters as I do, you will definitely want to visit beoysteraware.com and learn more about Vibrio vulnificus.

If you're concerned about the disease, take a look at Be Oyster Aware's information on Post-Harvest Processes. The post-harvest process is a new technology developed by Gulf Coast oyster processors who are assuring that when we eat raw oysters, we stand less of a chance of contracting Vibrio vulnificus.

I know since I've become familiar with beoysteraware.com, I've been a little more cautious about my love for raw oysters. I don't believe anyone should have the right to tell you what you can and cannot eat when it comes to food, but there's no reason they can't share what they know about foods. Check them out....

Osyter Awareness. Get the Facts.

Have you ever felt like the joke's on you? Well, I bet this mom-to-be Oyster did. Enjoy!

A father-to-be anxiously awaits the birth of his first child, but to his shock his wife gives birth to a baby crab. Quickly his wife looks up at him and says, "I'm sorry. I meant to tell you." To which he angrily replies, "You've been down at that crab shack eating crabs without me, again haven't you?"

If you're like me and love raw oysters, you may not even be thinking about the serious dangers of eating them raw. Oysters like, Gulf oysters can be very dangerous for some people. They can carry Vibrio vulnificus, a disease that can cause serious illness in some people.

An easy way to avoid the disease is by making sure you eat cooked oysters rather than raw ones. If you're like me however, eating cooked verses raw is easier said than done. So if this is the case, please at least educate yourself through Be Oyster Aware's website and get the real facts about consuming raw oysters. It could save your life.
