The College

Shelly had been thinking about going back to school for a while now. Jill had recently told her about http://www.bestonlinedegrees.org since she’d decided she didn’t want to go to her local college. She was always busy it seemed and never really had time to leave the house to even manage a trip to the grocery, so trying to attend local classes was definitely out of the question.

But to Shelly’s surprise after she’d visited the website link, her local college had bombarded her with emails and phone calls almost immediately. After she’d deleted the last email from the college and let the answering machine take the next call from the director of the school, Shelly sent an IM to Jill asking her if she’d experienced the same problem.

“No and that’s weird.” Jill typed back to her.
“Have you tried to contact the school board about the problem?”
“Yes. They haven’t returned my calls.”
“Hmm. IDK then. If they start calling or emailing me, I’ll let you know.”

After logging off her computer, Shelly replayed the last three messages left by the school. Jill was right. It was definitely a weird situation and one she decided was just best to ignore. But the calls kept coming and there were so many emails that she had to close her email account. Then she decided to change her phone number. It worked for a few days until early one morning she was awoken by the voice of the school director.

“Miss Lange, we understand you’re interested in obtaining a degree from our college.” “It’s 4am! And no I’m looking at a website for a degree on the internet. Goodbye!” “Wait.-” She wasn’t about to listen to what he had to say and slammed the phone into the cradle. This was ridiculous and that damn school had just taken matters to a whole other level! But it was one she would handle later that day she decided as she slowly drifted off to sleep. Then came the knock at the door.

Sitting up with a grumble, Shelly stumbled out of bed as the knocking continued. “I’m coming! Hold on!” But as she crossed the living room to the front door, she suddenly had an eerie feeling and hesitated for a brief moment before she brushed off the feeling an opened the door.

Shelly stared in awe at the man standing before her as he smiled and said, “Miss Lange, we understand you’re interested in obtaining a degree from our college.”

the state at it's best

There are some days when I'm like a doormat and tend to let people step all over me. Yesterday wasn't one of them. It's taken a few years, but my husband finally decided it was time to head back to school, thanks to the encouragement of an old friend and co-worker of his.

It's been a little over 4 weeks now and he's stuck with his decision and has been attending his classes faithfully. Yesterday he needed to pick up his books for his next class, so we headed out to the college to do just that. To our surprise we were told his application for a program from our local job service to help fund his classes had yet to be received. So the college called job service who then told him they needed to see him immediately.

So we dropped by our local job service office only to be yelled at (yes she really did yell) by an employee of the office, stating that she'd never even heard of my husband and accusing him of not even being registered with the office. My husband was speechless, so I pointed out yes he had registered and so did the office's secretary. I mean heck, she's seen us more times than we can count and knows exactly who he is. Still the other employee kept insisting it didn't matter because my husband wasn't registered and she actually told him he'd better drop that class immediately because they were not going to help him whatsoever.

After one heck of a big battle, we learned that all of the files that were on my husband were shredded not even a month after he'd been registered with them. Of course I'm a very cautious person and when I heard this bit of information, warning signals went up and as we left the office I told my husband something was not right.

So we went home and found the paperwork that showed him as being registered and took it back to job service. The employee who had yelled at us was not there, so my husband talked to the secretary who admitted that the paperwork they'd shredded was a big no-no and very illegal and he had indeed been registered. Of course she couldn't argue since we had the proof. Still, the damage was done and because of it, it could possibly affect my husband's history credit among other things and my husband is still being blamed.

But what really irks me and it was quite obvious, because my husband has long hair and looks like a mountain man, the employee automatically assumed we were trouble and we were liars and helping us wasn't on her to do list. Now as of right now I told my husband that he should take the illegal shredding and way he was treated to the top of the food chain. But my husband is a little more lenient on the entire situation and doesn't want to start trouble.

His teacher is getting him a pell grant instead which will cover classes, thankfully since we couldn't afford it otherwise. But since job service did shred all of his info and considers him as non-registered for job hunting, will it affect unemployment and his credit and work history? Knowing me I'll find out soon enough because when I'm determined I'm determined, but as far as taking it up with the big bosses, that is my husband's decision and I'll have to leave it as that.

But in my opinion, job service needs to sit down with their employees and fire those that have a habit of judging a book by it's cover. After all, the services offered are suppose to help those who need it. That means everyone. Not just those they decide are worthy of their help. For now this doormat is done being stepped all over.

Future Job Options

Lately I've really been considering going back to school and furthering my education in MS Nursing. However, I don't want to have to take classes away from home. The reason for this is because we can't afford daycare and it would also take time away from my work online.

I found a great college that allows me to do just that. Saint Xavier University has some great high quality graduate programs that are ran by a professional faculty. Plus, they've had over 3,50o graduates. Not bad for an online school! They also have financial aid which is definitely something I could use. However, I do need to have a bachelor's degree from an already accredited college course to apply for this program. Looks like I'm out of luck for now. Bummer.

It's really something to think about though. There is a community college here that does offer nursing classes on their campus. Well, who knows. maybe I'll start there and end with Saint Xavier University.

It All Comes Down To

As you are all very well aware of by now, my husband is at risk of a lay off at his job. Today is the day on whether or not we will know if he made it through the lay off or not. If he didn't, we're in the dark on what we'll do.

There really is no option of selling this house because right now, no one is willing to buy anything. And honestly, I don't blame them! So in order to stay afloat we'll need to take other drastic measures.

One of the things I considered not too long ago was getting a degree online. I'm pretty good at management, so I considered getting a CAPM certificate. While I do realize a lot of the bigger salaried workers are the first to get cut, I also realize that this economy crisis we're in, won't be forever.

Management makes anywhere from $70,000 to $111,000 per a year. That's pretty good! Now, I doubt right now those guys are making that much, but in the future I'd be willing to bet they'll be at that salary again.

I also looked at Crisis Management with St. Joseph's University. While the yearly salary is extremely low (less than what my husband makes per a year in some areas), it's still very rewarding work.

What;s Your Opinion? Would you do something like this if it meant being better off financially in the long run? Or do you prefer to work in something you're truly passionate about, despite the pay?

Acting Dreams and Writing My Novel

There are a lot of goals that I want to accomplish in my life. At one time, acting was one of them. I had actually gotten as far as heading to modeling school, but after graduation acting was never brought up with the company. It was a bit of a disappointment.

Eventually I moved to Las Vegas and then considered a move to California. However, I moved back to the midwest due to family issues. So I don't really know if I'll ever get a chance to do any acting.

I will however publish my novel one of these days and when I do, I hope to see it on the big screen. That may be a big stretch, but maybe a small moving making company might run across it, you know?

Anyway, I'm rambling. The reason I was thinking about all of that was because of my DVD burner. I've never used it and wondered if I would ever have the opportunity to do so. Right now I don't even have a good video camera to record with.lol I have however seen a lot of online websites like Burn2DVD.com that will allow people who don't have a burner to burn DVDs. Pretty cool, but I don't know too many people who don't already have a built in one in their laptop or computer! Still, it's a neat idea and once again I'm rambling.lol

Uhh Ohhh

Two things important going on here in the world of the Insane Writer. The 1st being there is no school for the kids tomorrow. We had some nasty sleet which made hell for drivers everywhere so the school was smart enough not to risk lives this time.

The second is, the husband set up the loan from his check early for the vehicle which means we'll be very short on cash for the next three weeks. The loan pulls weekly, but wasn't suppose to start until Mid-February, but he didn't tell Human Resources that, so they'll be sending the money early. Unfortunately it doesn't mean we get to pay off the loan early. It just means there's extra money in the account my husband will assume is play money unless he tells the bank lender otherwise. Sigh.

Is the School Responsible?

About 3 1/2 weeks ago the kids got into trouble for fighting with each other on the school bus here in Independence, Kansas. Because they did not need to ride the bus directly after that for the next three weeks, we had to drop the bus slips off at school. We told the school of the situation and they told us they'd get the slips to the bus barn.

Today we learned the kids were told by the bus driver that they could not ride the bus anymore because the driver hadn't received the bus slips. This creates a serious problem since the kids have to ride the bus to and from school each day with their mom, generally, every other week.

So I called and left a message with the principal, hoping that something can be done immediately about the situation. Since Q often has outbursts due to his autism, it isn't always easy for him to abide by bus rules. Often times his sister, T has to get him to calm down when he does have an outburst on the bus.

This isn't the first time the kids have had problems on the bus either. Last year T had to defend Q several times because other kids were making fun of him for his autism and I don't think those kids were ever disciplined for it either. Also, last year , the bus driver allowed the kids to get off the bus where we found them wandering alone on a very busy street. So whose responsibility is it? We trust our kids with the school and school buses every single day, but they never seem to be at fault.

A New Update On Our School System

I did receive a call from our school principal. My husband also received a call, but it was from the school that the buses meet up at, for the transfer. While my husband got an unreasonable answer as to why our kids walked away without the school's knowledge, our school principal offered a better explanation to me as to why our school system is so screwed up.

Apparently, the reason they don't keep a list of what students get on and off the bus, is because each day, students on those buses change. By this the principal meant, sometimes a parent will call at the last minute and take the child off of the bus because their work schedule, etc. has changed for the day. So the list was not working. He did offer me the option of coming up with some ideas and seeing if we could change things together for the school. I've told him I will have to sit down and see what I can do.

I think the first thing I would like to do is talk to other parents and get some ideas from them as well. If they realize the concern of kids getting off the bus, etc. I think they will sit down and offer help on solving the problem.

An Update on Our School System

I ended up having to call the school board today, since our kids' school did not return our phone call. I was told to call the bus barn and find out if they have some form of monitoring system for the kids. I called the Bus Barn. They don't. So I called the school board back and they're looking into the matter and will call us back. I hope the school board will keep to their word. I'd hate to think that our kids or someone else's kids could end up missing because the bus barn doesn't know who gets on and off the bus!!!!

If I don't get a satisfactory answer, I'll take it up with the city, next. I don't understand why there is not a way to know at all times where the kids are when they are still at school!!

The School Lost Our Kids!!!!

Yesterday, my husband and I went to the school to pick up the kids. When we arrived the kids were nowhere in sight. We learned that they had been bused to the daycare which wouldn't even be open! We always pick the kids up on Fridays at the school on our week, so we're not sure how they got things mixed up..but it's possible they misunderstood my husband's request. So we left it at our fault and apologized.

Since the bus makes a stop at another school here in town we asked if they could call the other school to see if the kids could be stopped before they were dropped off at the daycare. A secretary that we've had problems with before pouted about it, but made the call. We were told the bus had already left for the daycare. With a panic worry and being a little upset, my husband quickly explained we would never make it to the daycare in time. The secretary shot back in a rude and snappy remark that he had better hurry up and get there then. No concern whatsoever in her voice.

So, we left in a mad dash and called one of the daycare owners. She luckily happened to be at the daycare that day! About 10 blocks down the road, my husband just happened to spot the kids walking alone across a busy intersection! Far from Daycare and the other school!!!

We learned from the kids that they had got off of the bus and realized they were not suppose to go to daycare, so instead of getting on the transfer bus, they started walking. They didn't have any idea where they were even going! We were very lucky that we happened to be driving by in that area and saw them!!! We were also lucky a stranger hadn't picked them up or they hadn't been hit by traffic!!!

We called the school, but never got an answer. Now understandably, the children should not have wandered away, but they are too young really understand that. What really concerns me is my step-son has autism and gets confused at times. It's harder for him to understand things. What would have happened if his sister hadn't been there that day and he had decided to wander off? That scares me!! Where was the bus driver or helper who should have a list of the students who transfer to that bus? Why did they not call us immediately and tell us the kids were not on that bus!!! The secretary had told us that they had already left the other school, which means they never knew the kids were missing!!!

We have already called and left a message with the school to call us back about the situation. We are also calling the school board about the problem, Monday. This has not been the first time we've had a problem with this school. And sadly, I doubt it will be the last.

Another odd note about school: I'm not sure if this is just effective here or not, but my step-daughter got 2 days of detention for playing tag Wednesday. They considered tag as hitting/fighting. Huh? I remember playing tag as a kid. It's such a shame that they're taking so much fun out of kids simply playing.

I Changed My Mind

I wrote a post a while back about the school system and their thermometers being off. Then I went on about some garbage sentence saying -"So to all those schools who we understand are concerned about our children's well-being, we love you for it..."

I've changed my mind about one particular school. Why???

Because yesterday, I received a phone call from my fiance's daughter's school. Apparently his daughter had gotten on the wrong bus and was now at another school instead of home with mom in another town. Luckily I was at home since my fiance was at work and her mom could not be reached. After bringing her back here, I received mom's panicking phone call after finding out her child had not gotten off the bus where they lived.

Apparently the school had told her the same thing they'd told me at first. She'd gotten on the wrong bus. When her mom questioned how that happened, they then changed their story and said she'd gotten on the right bus, but gotten off at another school.

Now what's seriously messed up about the matter is, first of all... It's very obvious they were trying to cover their ass and blame it on the child. BAD IDEA. VERY BAD IDEA!

Every day the school's teachers, count heads and make sure every kid makes it on the correct bus to get home. Every day the bus driver does the same exact thing. Now any way you look at it, someone working for the school, screwed up BIG TIME!

What's even more messed up is that they would have never known she had even gotten off if it were not for my fiance's daughter who did the right thing and told the other school's principal that she was not suppose to be there. That was the only reason the school knew where she was!!!! What would have happened if someone would have snatched her or if she was scared enough that she didn't know what to do? She could have wandered away from the school!!!!

It pisses me off that they had no idea where she was at, didn't even know she was missing until that child told them and then they tried to cover their ass and blame it all on her!!!

It's not the first time a school has lost a child either. When my 10 year old started kindergarten at another school in the state of Oklahoma, the very first day, his teacher lost him. I almost understood that it was a first day and she didn't know all of the kids yet, until.... she walked away, back to the rest of the class without a concern in the world that my child was missing.

Come to find out, he had went to the other side of the school to find his oldest brother.
The very next day, I reported the incident with her to the principal. The rest of the school year he was always in trouble for some reason. Funny however, after that school year, he never was in trouble again.

And to think we have to put our trust into these schools!

When Schools Go Too Far

I was viewing a recent reader's post when it reminded me of one of our local school's and our recent dealings with them.

A few months ago I received a call from my fiance's daughter's school. She was sick they said and I needed to pick her up. I knew she was getting over a cough which we'd been taking care of at home, so I set out thinking her cough had just gotten worse. When I arrived at the school, I was told she was running a 106 temperature. 106??? I panicked (more so because of the time's peanut butter scare) and then became outraged that the school had not bothered to tell me this over the phone. Then I looked at her and checked her forehead. She felt a little warmer than usual, but not a concerned 106. After questioning why they had not told me this over the phone and then asking if they were sure the temperature was right (they argued it was and the principal went as far as saying he wanted to speak with my fiance) I quickly called my fiance and his daughter's doctor so that we could rush her in as an emergency appointment. While waiting for my fiance to get home, I checked her temperature myself with two different thermometers just to make sure. 98 was what I got for both. Between the time my fiance made it home and we made it in to the doctor to have her checked was about 20 minutes from the time we left the school. Now keep this in mind folks.

After the doctor had checked her he came up with the same results I did. 98. Then we asked how the school nurse could have came up with 106. He said he didn't know, but there was no way her temperature could have been 106 and dropped that drastically even if she's had tylenol or any liquids(I never gave her anything). It might have been a little higher because of her cough, but not 106! Then he went on to tell my fiance about his kids going to the same school and being sent home with an exaggerated temperature. So we asked for a doctor's note to explain that her temperature was fine, but to keep her out for the remainder of the day since she did have a cough.

When we returned to the school with the note and asked to speak with both the principal and the nurse we were told they were not there. Then when we explained what the doctor had noted, the secretary mumbled she couldn't talk about the situation, but would let the nurse and principal know. Then she went on to say I had to have given her something to drop the temperature! When I explained I hadn't and even if I had the time frame could still not have dropped the temperature that drastically, she argued with my fiance and I. So we simply told her to have the principal confirm it with the doctor since he was the one who confirmed it. She stopped arguing and went on to again say, she couldn't talk about the situation. Sigh.

We checked back Monday to speak to the nurse and principal. No nurse and no principal. For a principal who insists on speaking with my fiance, he sure wasn't around anytime my fiance asked to see him. After another failed attempt a few days later, we finally gave up.

Now we are slowly learning from other parents who have came out of the woodwork, we are not the only ones whose child has been sent home for an exaggerated temperature. We are very sure the school's thermometers are off, but will the school listen? Nope.

So to all those schools who we understand are concerned about our children's well-being and we love you for it... If you get a situation like the one above, please check your equipment. If it had been a real situation with faulty equipment, there's no telling what the outcome may have been!
