Karen Kay

One of my absolute favorite Native American romance authors is Karen Kay. And one of my favorite novels from her is War Cloud's Passion. Several years ago I had the honor of actually talking with Karen and review her novel, The Princess and the Wolf, before it even went to print. It was funny because my kids' dad was jumping up and down shouting and screaming from excitement that I was reviewing a very popular author.lol I thought I would share my review with you of that novel.

The Princess and the Wolf

By Karen Kay

Deceived by a man she once loved, Princess Sierra must now seek out that same man in order to find a missing husband she has never loved, in a land she's never been to.

Betrayed by the woman he has never stopped loving, High Wolf needed no reminder of his painful past and refuses to give in to the Princess's demand and guide her.

Determined to find her missing husband and stop a war between their duchies, The Princess boards a ship and goes on without High Wolf even though he is never far behind.

Then without sudden warning a fire breaks out on the ship and High Wolf risks his own life to save her.

Alone and surrounded by enemies High Wolf will stop at nothing to keep Princess Sierra safe, even if it means sending her away. Yet with every single moment that passes them by, he finds a love that has never died and a need to call her his own.

The Princess and the Wolf gives readers a new thrill in Native American Romance, taking one Princess and a Cheyenne brave, and turning what is forbidden into a fiery passion that was meant to be.

The characters are solid and each original in their own ways, bringing the story to life.

Karen Kay's The Princess and the Wolf is as sensational as it is fiery and will leave readers yearning for more.

Once in a Blue Moon

Not too long ago I was given the opportunity to review Author Eileen Goudge's latest novel, Once in a Blue Moon. Okay first let me be really honest. I'm not big into just any romance novel (isn't that insane?) and well this one... is really more about the relationship of two sisters. Still, when I first heard about the book it intrigued me.

So imagine having to raise yourself when you're just a kid and then having to raise your baby sister when you're still just a kid. Well, that's what happens to Lindsay who must care for her sister Kerrie Ann since their mother isn't responsible enough to be a parent. The good news is, Lindsay is not alone and with an ex-stripper's help, she is able to keep Kerrie Ann safe from harm for the most part.

But then, her mother is arrested for dealing drugs and the girls are sent to foster care and placed in separate homes. And while Lindsay finds a family who loves and nurtures her, Kerrie Ann isn't so lucky and soon takes the same path as her mother, losing her own child in the process.

Now, Kerrie Ann needs help and her sister whom she hasn't seen in thirty years is her only hope to regain custody of her daughter and get her life straight. But the sisters clash in almost every way possible making things very difficult. While Lindsay is calm and soft-hearted, Kerrie Ann is loud and speaks her mind even when it isn't for the best.

In the end, the sisters must not only fight for what they each believe in, they must also fight to regain the sisterhood they once had and so desperately need.

It was wonderful to see that Author Eileen Goudge kept most of the characters from the past into the present and didn't change them too much. While there was some differences, there wasn't a big wow shocker when it came to the characters or the plot. And while I did enjoy reading Once in a Blue Moon, I must admit I wasn't too fond of Kerrie Ann's boyfriend having an almost exact background as Kerrie herself.

I understand the need for acceptance and needing a way to bring that into the story, but it just didn't seem real enough. Also if you walk into a drug dealer's house and haven't been on the loop in years, the dealer isn't going to fear you and give out whatever information you want without a fight no matter how much of an idiot he really is. So there were some moments that just weren't really believable.

Other than that, I thought the storyline was really good and I liked the characters. Lindsay I can actually relate to and oddly enough Kerrie Ann's character happens to be my best friend. So if you're looking for a little bit of romance and sisterly drama, I'd say this book is right up your alley! Bravo Eileen for a novel well done!
If you want to know more about the book or the author you can visit Eileen on Facebook or you can add her to Twitter. Now if that's not enough to keep fans happy, I don't know what is!

Review of Warming Up at the Ramada

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if we didn’t have all of the luxuries we are so use to. What if we stopped living the life we have right now and free ourselves from everything? No more utility bills, credit card bills, taxes, mortgage or rent. Sound intriguing? If so, come along on a journey with author Kim Richard Smith as he does just that in his memoir, “Warming Up At The Ramada.”

After the rise and fall of his newspaper company, author Kim Richard Smith finds that living a simpler life and fulfilling his dream of becoming a writer in a world where greed and luxury are a top priority is the road he must take. Smith opens our eyes to all of the problems that have left our environment in shambles. He shows us that one can live a simpler life without the need for luxuries like a washer or dryer, microwave, dishwasher, etc. He reminds us of what Mother Nature has to offer while living in a little shack in the woods and traveling from campground to campground.

While Kim Richard Smith’s ideal life may not be for everyone, it does make one think. Why do we live in a world where the words “Freedom of Speech” are only words and nothing more? Why must we pay the government to live on our own land, eat and work so that we can survive? And why do our children get taken away if we tell them they cannot have something or we choose not to have electricity or hot water. These are only a few questions that make one think.

In reality we are no longer able to live freely as we choose even if it harms no one. If we do, we’re disciplined for it because we’re not following society’s rules. There is no doubt in my mind that we no longer have the right to think or act for ourselves. We must live the way society sees fit. And in my opinion this is wrong. It is very wrong.

While Smith’s memoir is a work in progress, I am intrigued by what I have read. I want to know more and look forward to his future writings. I have finally opened my eyes thanks to his knowledge. I hope that you will be able to see what I have seen and share in the journey that author Kim Richard Smith takes in, “Warming Up at the Ramada.”

Chapter 2 of The Generation

If you've missed Chapter One of the novel I am working on, here is "The Generation", again. Please feel free to let me know what you think.

"Chapter Two"

She took two steps forward and stopped. She was standing in the entrance hallway. Nothing had changed. The walls were still aligned with black walnut paneling and bare from any signs of family life, the carpet the same deep cranberry red as she remembered, on the left the kitchen entrance and further down on the right the dining room, which adjoined into the living room.

“Lunch will be ready in five minutes.” She heard her mother call from the kitchen and then nodded knowing full well her mother was speaking to her father.

The smell of freshly baked cheddar bread drifted from the kitchen. She edged closer to the kitchen doorway until she had a clear view of the kitchen, still keeping herself hidden enough so that her mother would not see her. She was standing at the island. The sound of the chop, chop, chop, against the cutting board directed her to small round hands aged with time, a small pudgy frame and long brown locks streaked with silver.

Terri Johnson had never condoned her husband’s dismissal of their daughter and never forgave him for it. She knew her mother had tried to see her on several occasions, but was denied visitations for one reason or another. She smiled at her mother, nodded a silent goodbye and then let out a slow heavy sigh. It was now or never.

“Hello?” She walked past the kitchen doorway, across the dining room, past the beautiful old oak grandfather clock her mother had given to her father on his 36th birthday and toward the living room never once giving a second thought to her mother‘s call.

She stared back at her reflection in the grandfather clock’s glass door trying to forget the memories. Something that was far easier said than done, but now was not the time to be dredging up the past, and she knew it, and with that she turned her attention back to her task.

It would be hours before the institute realized she was gone. It had been all too easy. She thought, as she caressed the steel metal of the gun her father had kept in the Study’s display case in the palm of her hand.

She had simply walked out of Howswel Institute while everyone was busy with one of Cooper Blackwell’s daily violent outbursts. They never watched her. They never had a reason to. She wasn’t sick and everyone who was familiar with The Johnson family knew it. Dale Johnson had simply bribed Howswel in allowing his daughter to be institutionalized for his own personal reasons.

All of those years wasted. In a place she never belonged. Seven long years of heartache and pain, of wanting and waiting for a family that would never come, a father who had disowned her the day she was born. All of those nights weeping, until she could no longer feel the pain deep down inside. And then the weeping stopped. And the hurt that once reflected back into the depth of her eyes, gone. Now there was nothing left to weep for. Tonight there was a difference in her eyes, something that hadn’t been seen in years. Bright green, like the color of jades, full of laughter and contentment. Eyes that now peered out of the darkness at the ruggedly handsome man, her father, partially hidden behind the newspaper, resting comfortably in his favorite leather recliner in front of the living room fireplace.

She looked down at the gun in her hand, then lifted it at her father’s head. Her finger edged toward the gun’s hammer, but then something deep inside willed her to stop. Her face twisted in pain, her eyes narrowed in disgust and the tears began, streaming down her ivory oblong-shaped face. Damn not now. Not now.

She couldn‘t remember the last time her father had ever really acknowledged her. At least not in the way a father would.

“A father can‘t bond with a daughter.” He had said. “They aren‘t strong enough, tough enough.”

From the time she had learned how to walk and talk, she’d tried desperately to be strong enough, tough enough. Now there was only one way to end the pain, and she would be damned if she let her emotions get the best of her. She swiped at her tear stricken face angrily.

“Only one way.” She whispered.

A father can’t bond with a daughter. Cold steel caressed the palm of her hand. It was time. A father can’t bond with a daughter. More hot tears slid down her face. Swiping them away she took a deep breath and raised the gun at her father’s head once more. Then with long slender fingers, cocked the gun and steadied a shaky finger on the trigger. She blinked, focused her gaze and reality struck her hard as if someone had smacked a hand up the backside of her head. A father can’t bond with a daughter. Damn him. Damn him forever.

She sighed, stepped back and slowly lowered the gun. The sudden sound of footsteps coming from behind alerted her to the presence of someone else in the room. She jerked to attention, causing the gun to slip from her hands and go off. She hadn’t even realized the gun had fired until a spark from the bullet ricocheted off the brick mantle of the fireplace pulling a scream of terror from her mother.

“Why daddy? Why?” She found herself yelling. But Instead of answering, he simply stared at her his face showing no remorse, no guilt, no care. The man hadn’t even flinched at the stray bullet that had been inches from his head or the gun that she had retrieved and now aimed at him once more.

Her eyes narrowed as she realized he would never change. He would always be a heartless bastard. A man she had always known as daddy. Well no more.

“No more.” The words rolled off her tongue with a hiss as she raised the gun, cocked it and fired.

Suddenly, she felt strong clammy hands grab her from behind, struggle the gun away and a harsh voice say, “Sara Johnson, I have been looking for you.”

Author James Patterson

Back in February at my old job, I noticed that Author James Patterson's 7th Heaven book, was a huge seller. I'd read the back of the book a few times, but to be honest, I wasn't really familiar with his work.

Well, I just went back and re-read the introduction to 7th Heaven again and I could actually see myself reading it. James Patterson seems to be well-known for his suspense thrillers. 7th Heaven is the seventh installment in the bestselling series. If you're a fan of suspense thrillers or James Patterson, be sure to check out his latest book.

I Am Not a Writer!

Today I was told I am not a writer. I am not published in a magazine, I have no readers, so therefore I am not a writer. Isn't it lovely when you're insulted in such a way! And to think, I offered them a review which they considered pointless because of course.. In their eyes I am not a writer. Well, to them I say, a review is not necessary... now and in the future, when everyone knows my name....since of course, I am not a writer. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

For those who have experienced the loveliness of negative people like those above, don't let it get you down. It's their loss, not yours. Author, Stephen King once lived in an trailer. His walls were covered in rejection slips. Another author once submitted a very famous novel of his under another name, to the same publisher who published it before. They rejected it.

Laugh in the eyes of idiocy. Live for the moment and never let go of your dreams.

Promoting with a Calendar

In the future I've thought about taking the idea of my work as a free-lance writer and promoting myself for the whole world to see. Or promoting myself as an author when I do finally publish that novel. In order to do something like that, I'm going to need help and something that will catch the attention of my clients/readers.

I believe custom printed calendars can be an excellent way to promote a business and or name. I don't know anyone who doesn't have at least one calendar in their house. I know we have about 4 or 5 with different local businesses on them.

Blueberry Brands custom printed calendars offers an easy way to promote any business at a reasonable price. Some as low as 89 cents per a calendar. Looking for a specific theme? Blueberry Brands offers a variety of calendar themes to suit even the pickiest person. Yep, that'd be me!

I was even thinking.... It might be kind of neat to send these out as a thank you for weddings or other special events. Families or the Bride and Groom can put their info and a special message on the calendar. Newlyweds could even go one step further and purchase the scenic calenders as a reminder of "We're on Our Honeymoon." to family members. Maybe even visit those scenic views.

There are so many possibilities for these custom printed calendars!

Oprah's Book Club Make's Amazon Rich.

By now most people know about Amazon.com, but what many may not know is apparently, Thanks to Oprah Winfrey's Book club, they're getting rich!

Several weeks ago I was picking the book Eckhart Tolle's, "A New Earth" for shipment to Amazon's customers like crazy. At first I wondered why. I mean to be honest, after looking at the back cover, the guy sort of came across as creepy to me. Why would someone like Oprah Winfrey pick such a book, I thought to myself.

After picking about 200 copies of the book in one day, I decided to do a little research and check this guy out. As it turns out, Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth" is a sort of spiritual guide to life. In his book he shows you how to find your own life's purpose and a lot of people, including Oprah are loving the idea of his book.

They're loving it so much in fact, that Oprah and Eckhart are joining forces on March 3rd to teach an online class about the subject. How insane is that? So insane that the book has already sold a whopping 3.5 million copies!

While I might not be big into the belief of spirituality, it definitely looks like an interesting book and class, and I'd say a lot of people would agree.

Author Suze Orman is a Financial Goddess. Enough Said!

Yesterday I was one of the millions who had the opportunity to download Suze Orman's "Women & Money" for free, thanks to one of my favorite debt blogs, "Blogging Away Debt."

Although the free download offer has ended, please don't let that stop you from reading Suze Orman's financial books. Suze has been featured on Oprah many times. Her advice for women and finance is astounding. I can honestly say, I have never been able to really sit down and take to heart any kind of financial advice...that is until I read a copy of Suze Orman's, "Women and Money." Now this insane writer is hooked and can't wait to read the rest of her financial books for women.

"Women and Money" is pretty simple and straight forward. I think my favorite part of the book is however, how Suze tells us how it all began for her. She is a true inspiration when it comes to women and financial success.

To find out more, please consider picking up a copy of "Women and Money", whether it be from your local bookstore, online or your local library. Believe me, it's well worth the read.

Tom Cruise and Scientology

The video that has so many people in an uproar. I enjoy actor Tom Cruise's work and when it comes to religion I say, to each his own. I have never been one to down anyone's religion and will never do so. As a matter of fact my good friend Author Karen Kay is a supporter of Scientology as well.

What do you think?
